Praia do Cabedelo, on the south bank of the Rio Lima rivermouth, is widely regarded as the windiest reliable kite beach in Portugal — the summer Nortada blows here an average of 20–30 knots, day after day, from spring through autumn.
A long breakwater pier divides the spot: inside, the water flattens off into a protected zone ideal for learning and freestyle; outside, the open Atlantic delivers proper waves for those who want them. That split personality makes Cabedelo work for every level, which is why several schools and a Duotone Pro Center are based right on the sand.
The town of Viana do Castelo itself is a handsome historic port with good food and easy rail links from Porto (about an hour south), making it a popular long-weekend kite destination for northern Europeans.
Prices: Most schools charge roughly EUR 60–90/h for private lessons; group and multi-day packages available. Wetsuit recommended — the Atlantic is cool even in summer.
