The Ria de Alvor is a shallow, sandy-bottomed tidal lagoon on the western Algarve coast, between the towns of Alvor and Lagos. At low tide much of it is waist-deep and mirror-flat, letting students stand while they learn — about as forgiving as kiteboarding conditions get, with the bonus of the Algarve's warm water and sunshine.
The reliable Nortada thermal runs May through September, with June to August the most consistent (often 15–25 knots every afternoon). As the tide fills the lagoon, the spot suits freestyle and flat-water progression; nearby Meia Praia in Lagos is where riders graduate to open-water sessions.
With the Algarve's flights, beaches, food and nightlife on the doorstep, Alvor is a popular destination for a warm-water learning trip when the rest of Europe is cooling down.
Prices: Algarve schools are mostly VDWS/IKO certified with small group sizes. Warm water means a shorty or boardshorts in high summer.
