Esposende sits at the mouth of the Rio Cávado inside a natural park, about 40 minutes north of Porto. It is one of the most versatile spots on the north coast — a soft-bottomed, shallow lagoon for safe learning and freestyle, a rivermouth section, and open-ocean waves, all within a short walk.
The lagoon's waist-deep, flat water and sandy bottom make it genuinely beginner-safe, while the NNW summer wind that powers it is the same reliable Nortada that blows up and down this coast from May to September. Schools run lessons on the lagoon with boat surveillance.
It is a quieter, more local-feeling alternative to busy Viana do Castelo just up the coast, and the two pair well on a single trip.
Prices: Lagoon lessons typically include boat support; expect EUR 60–90/h private. Bring a wetsuit.
