Pikakari Beach is located on the Paljassaare Peninsula on the north-western edge of Tallinn, facing out into Tallinn Bay and the Gulf of Finland. Local kiteboarders use it as a convenient session spot when suitable winds arrive, avoiding the need to travel to more distant coastal areas.
The Gulf of Finland can produce short, steep chop when northerly and north-westerly winds blow, making conditions challenging. On south-westerly winds, the bay becomes more sheltered and conditions flatten out. The spot is best suited to intermediate and advanced riders who can handle variable conditions and boat traffic in the area.
The industrial port of Tallinn and shipping lanes are nearby, so riders need to stay alert to vessel traffic. There are no dedicated kite facilities at the beach and it is primarily used by local riders who know the area well.
Despite its rough-around-the-edges character, the backdrop of Tallinn's Old Town spires visible in the distance adds a unique atmosphere. After a session, the city's restaurants, bars and medieval old town are just minutes away.
