Liepāja is widely regarded as one of the windiest places in Latvia and the broader Baltic region, earning it the nickname 'the city where the wind is born.' The beach here is massive — wide, long, and open to the full fetch of the Baltic Sea — meaning westerly winds arrive unobstructed and wave conditions develop quickly during stronger winds.
The North Beach area, away from the main city swimming beach, is the preferred kite launch zone. Conditions range from butter-flat in light summer breezes to genuine wave riding during autumn and spring storms. The spot suits intermediate to advanced riders, as wind can be strong and gusty and the Baltic water is cold outside summer.
The local kite scene in Liepāja is active, with local riders and occasional events. The city itself is vibrant, known for its music culture and art nouveau architecture. Wetsuits are recommended from September through May, and riders should be aware of rip currents and longshore drift during stronger wind events.
Liepāja's Lake Liepāja, just behind the city, also occasionally hosts kite sessions in calmer conditions, offering a flat-water alternative when Baltic conditions are too rough.
