Viganj sits on the southern tip of the Pelješac Peninsula, facing across the narrow channel toward the island of Korčula. The Maestral sea breeze is the dominant wind here, typically building from late morning and reaching 15–25 knots through the afternoon — one of the most consistent thermal wind patterns in the entire Adriatic. The channel orientation funnels and accelerates the wind, making it particularly reliable from June through August.
The water in the channel is relatively flat to slightly choppy, making it excellent for beginners learning to control a kite and for intermediate riders working on their freestyle tricks. Advanced riders enjoy the consistent conditions for big air and unhooked moves. There are multiple launch/land zones along the pebbly beach, and the local kite schools are well-organized with safety protocols.
The surrounding area is classic Dalmatian charm — stone villages, vineyards producing the famous Dingač and Postup wines, and crystal-clear turquoise water. The village of Viganj itself is tiny but buzzes with kite culture in summer, with a handful of bars and restaurants catering to the international crowd of riders that descends each season.
Hazards include boat traffic in the channel and the occasional Jugo (SE wind) which can bring choppier, stronger conditions less suitable for beginners. Always check the forecast and launch from designated areas. The spot is well-marked and local instructors know the tides and wind cycles intimately.
