Maslenica sits at the northern end of the Novigrad Sea, where a narrow channel passes beneath a notable bridge on Croatia's coastal highway (D8). The Velebit mountain range rises sharply to the NE, and when the Bura blows, cold continental air is compressed through mountain gaps and accelerates dramatically as it funnels down into this narrow marine corridor. Wind speeds here regularly exceed 40–50 knots during strong Bura events.
For kitesurfers, Maslenica is an extreme destination — the kind of place you visit with your smallest kite and full commitment. The water in the channel can become a foaming white mess of spray and chop during the strongest events, making body recovery difficult. In moderate Bura conditions (20–30 knots), the channel offers powerful, consistent wind with flatter water sections near the lee shore.
The spot is not served by kite schools or formal infrastructure — it is an adventure spot for self-sufficient advanced riders. The bridge and surrounding infrastructure create turbulence in certain wind angles, and the rocky shores demand precise kite control on landing. The nearby town of Maslenica/Novigrad has basic amenities.
Winter and early spring are peak Bura season here. The raw power of the wind, combined with the dramatic backdrop of the Velebit range and the Dalmatian karst landscape, makes this one of Croatia's most memorable (and humbling) kiteboarding experiences for those qualified to handle it.
