Torre San Giovanni sits on the western Ionian coast of Salento, very close to the southernmost tip of mainland Italy. The broad, flat sandy beaches here make launching and landing straightforward, and the offshore profile of the Ionian Sea means conditions tend to be cleaner and less choppy than the Adriatic side.
The prevailing summer wind is the Ponentino, a westerly afternoon sea breeze that typically picks up from around noon and blows through to early evening. Strengths usually range from 12 to 22 knots — very manageable for all skill levels. Occasional stronger southerly or mistral-influenced days bring more excitement for advanced riders.
Several kite schools and camps set up at Torre San Giovanni during the summer season, making it a hub of activity for the Italian and visiting kite community. The surrounding area around Ugento has pinewood forests, dunes, and nature reserves, keeping the landscape attractive. Beach restaurants (lidos) are plentiful and lively in summer.
