The Ligurian Riviera between Diano Marina and San Bartolomeo al Mare is considered one of the best kiteboarding areas in northwest Italy. The Tramontane wind — a cold, northerly wind descending from the Alps — provides strong and relatively consistent conditions, particularly in spring and autumn. The Mistral can also produce good sessions from the northwest.
The coastline here is gently sloping with sandy and mixed beaches. Wind conditions can be quite variable due to the complex geography of the Ligurian Alps behind the coast, so riders should always check local forecasts carefully. On good Tramontane days, the water is choppy but manageable, with small waves forming offshore.
The area has a small but dedicated local kiting community and several schools operate along this stretch. The towns themselves are classic Italian Riviera, with good food, accommodation, and a relaxed pace of life. Summer months tend to be lighter on wind and very crowded with beach tourists.
