Porto Cesareo faces the Ionian Sea on the western (Ionian) side of the Salento heel of Italy. The bay is partially sheltered by offshore islands and sandbars, creating areas of very shallow, flat turquoise water reminiscent of tropical destinations. This flatness makes it excellent for learning and for freestyle practice.
Wind in summer is dominated by the Ponentino (westerly sea breeze) and can be moderate and pleasant. The spot is somewhat inconsistent compared to the Adriatic side of Salento, but on a good day the conditions are beautiful. The water is crystal clear and warm in summer.
The marine protected area status means there are specific zones where kiteboarding is permitted and zones where it is not. Riders must familiarise themselves with local regulations before launching. The town is a popular summer resort and can get crowded on the beach during July and August.
