Sal is the flattest and most wind-blasted of the Cape Verde archipelago, a sun-scorched volcanic island sitting roughly 570 kilometres off the Senegalese coast. Santa Maria, at the island's southern tip, is the tourist and kite hub — a low-key strip of pastel buildings, fresh seafood shacks, and a long sandy beach that faces directly into the trade-wind corridor. The light is sharp and Saharan, the water an improbable shade of turquoise, and the atmosphere unhurried in the way only small Atlantic islands manage.
The North-East Trade Winds drive Sal's reputation — consistent, cross-shore to side-onshore flow typically running 20–28 knots from November through April, with June to August offering a secondary productive window. Kite Beach at Santa Maria delivers sheltered flat-to-choppy water inside the bay, ideal for beginners and freestyle riders chasing clean pop. Beyond the bay's edge, open Atlantic swell builds quickly, rewarding wave riders. Ponta Preta in the northwest adds a more exposed, cross-offshore option for experienced riders comfortable with stronger, gustier conditions.
Santa Maria hosts a dense cluster of established kite schools and rental centres, making it one of the most accessible learning destinations in the Atlantic. Downwind runs along the coast and shuttle services are well organised. Ponta Preta offers a wilder, uncrowded contrast just 20 minutes north. Sal Rei on neighbouring Boa Vista is a feasible inter-island excursion for adventurous travellers. Flights connect directly to Sal's Américo Teixeira Airport from multiple European hubs, and accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses to boutique beach hotels.
