About this spot

Le Morne occupies the dramatic southwestern tip of Mauritius, where a UNESCO-listed basalt peninsula juts into the Indian Ocean beneath the brooding 556-metre bulk of Le Morne Brabant mountain. The lagoon here is one of the most visually arresting settings in kiteboarding — shallow turquoise water framed by coral reef, palm-fringed white sand, and that unmistakable silhouette rising behind. Luxury resorts line the shore, but the water belongs to kiters from first light, the mountain casting long morning shadows across the flats.

The Southern Indian Ocean Trade Winds arrive reliably from the south-southeast between May and October, blowing side-onshore across the lagoon at a steady 18–28 knots. Inside the reef, the water is flat to ankle-deep — a forgiving warm-up arena for intermediates and a freestyle playground for those waiting for the right swell. Outside, world-class reef breaks change the conversation entirely. One Eye, Manawa, and Small Reef deliver powerful, hollow waves demanding expert wave-riding skill, precise kite control, and a clear understanding of reef protocol.

The Le Morne kiteboarding scene is polished and well-organised. Several IKO-certified schools operate on the beach, catering to beginners in the lagoon shallows while experienced guides shuttle advanced riders to the outer reef passes. The peninsula's position means wind shadows can form near the mountain in the early morning — most sessions peak mid-morning through afternoon. A trip here pairs naturally with exploring Mauritius's south coast, and the concentration of high-end accommodation makes it one of the Indian Ocean's most comfortable kite destinations.
