La Ventana sits on the eastern shore of the Baja California Peninsula, roughly 45 kilometers south of La Paz, cradled between the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and the warm, turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. The town itself is little more than a dirt-road fishing village — a scattering of palapas, taco stands, and kite schools strung along a wide sandy beach. The mountains rise sharply behind, funneling wind down to the shore with remarkable consistency throughout the winter months.
The dominant force here is El Norte, a powerful thermal and pressure-driven wind that channels down the Sea of Cortez from November through March, blowing side-shore to side-onshore from the north-northwest at a reliable 20–30 knots. The water is relatively flat close to shore, with moderate chop building further out — ideal for freeriding, freestyle tricks, and foiling. Beginners benefit from the forgiving conditions near the beach, while advanced riders can push into the open bay for bigger kites and faster water.
La Ventana has evolved into a genuinely welcoming kite community without losing its dusty, unpretentious Baja soul. Several reputable schools and gear rental operations set up each season, and a loose social scene forms naturally around the beach. La Paz offers an airport, provisioning, and urban amenities just under an hour away. El Sargento, immediately to the north, provides an equally good launch with a slightly different crowd — together the two beaches make for a complete, unhurried winter kite trip.
