Klitmøller

Klitmøller sits on the northwestern tip of Jutland, fully exposed to the North Sea. Westerly and southwesterly winds funnel straight in from the Atlantic, producing consistent swells and strong, reliable gusts — exactly the conditions wave kiters and surfers crave. Wind strengths frequently exceed 20 knots, and sessions in 30+ knots are not unusual in the shoulder seasons.

The beach is wide and sandy, with multiple break zones depending on sandbar formation. Wave kiters dominate the lineup on bigger days, while flat sections in the bay closer to the harbour can offer slightly calmer water for those wanting a break from the chop. The water is cold year-round, and a 5mm wetsuit is recommended even in summer.

The local surf culture here is well established — 'Cold Hawaii' has been an official brand for the area since the early 2000s and now hosts international surf and kite competitions. Rental gear, lessons, and accommodation aimed at watersports visitors are all available in the small town. The community is welcoming but the surf breaks can get crowded on the best days.

Beyond the water, the surrounding Thy National Park is stunning, with dramatic dunes, heathland, and almost no light pollution. It is remote — the nearest large city is Thisted, about 30 km away — so plan logistics accordingly. Nearest airport is Thisted Airport (small regional) or Billund/Aalborg for more connections.
