Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara sits on a remote peninsula on Brazil's northeastern coast, roughly 300 kilometres west of Fortaleza in Ceará state. The village is famously car-free — access is by dune buggy across sand tracks — and that isolation has preserved something rare: a bohemian fishing settlement that somehow became one of the world's most celebrated kite destinations without losing its soul. Towering sand dunes drop straight to the sea, capoeira circles form at sunset, and the social gravity of the main square pulls riders in every evening.

The Brazilian Trade winds, locally called the Alísios, power Jericoacoara with remarkable consistency from roughly June through January, peaking between July and September with side-offshore to side-shore winds typically running 18–28 knots from the east-northeast. Conditions split cleanly between two worlds: the open Atlantic delivers rolling chop and occasional shore break for freeriders and wave enthusiasts, while a network of inland lagoons — Lagoa Paraíso and Lagoa Azul among them — offers mirror-flat water ideal for beginners learning to ride and freestylers drilling unhooked tricks.

Jeri's scene is dense with instruction — multiple IKO-certified schools operate on the beach and at the lagoons, and downwinders connecting the lagoons to outlying beaches like Preá and Tatajuba are a rite of passage. The wider Ceará coastline is a downwind corridor of largely empty beaches, making multi-day downwind missions straightforward to arrange with local operators. Mikaili Sol, the American-Brazilian rider who became a seven-time GKA World Champion, grew up competing in this region — a measure of the talent and wind quality the area consistently produces.
