Fanø is a small island off the southwest coast of Jutland, accessible by a 12-minute ferry from Esbjerg. Its western coastline faces directly into the North Sea and is one of Denmark's longest uninterrupted sandy beaches, running nearly the full length of the island. The beach is wide and flat, and at low tide the tidal flats extend hundreds of metres seaward.
Wind on Fanø's west coast is consistent and strong, predominantly from the west and southwest. The combination of firm wet sand and shallow tidal water makes it a popular spot for kitebuggying as well as kiteboarding. Water conditions range from very flat in the shallows to choppy further out.
The car is banned from much of the western beach, keeping it clean and relatively uncluttered outside the designated vehicle zones. Beginner sessions can be done in lighter winds on the flat sand; more experienced riders use the sea on windier days. The UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park flanks the eastern side of the island, so launching from the eastern shore is restricted.
Nordby, the main town on Fanø, has cafes, accommodation, and rental bikes — exploring the island by bike between sessions is a classic Fanø experience. The island has a long tradition of wind sports and is very welcoming to kiters.
