Cayo Guillermo is a small coral cay strung along Cuba's north-central Atlantic coast, connected to the mainland by a long causeway that crosses the shallow Bahía de Perros. Part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago — the King's Gardens — it sits beside the larger Cayo Coco and is fringed by powdery white beaches and dense mangrove. The pace here is unhurried, the palette is turquoise and bone-white, and the entire island operates almost exclusively through Cuba's resort system, lending it a quietly sealed-off, almost timeless quality.
The dominant force is the Caribbean Trade Winds, blowing from the northeast and east across the exposed Atlantic fetch, typically delivering 18–25 knots through the core season. Because the lagoon side of the cay is sheltered by shallow flats and reef, the water state is predominantly flat to marginally choppy — wide, ankle-deep sandbanks make for easy water starts and forgiving crashes. This setup is textbook territory for beginners building confidence and for freeride kiters after effortless, uninterrupted runs without the complexity of swell management.
Almost all kiters arrive through all-inclusive resort packages, and the handful of on-site kite schools offer equipment rental and instruction within the resort structure. There is no independent kite scene to speak of — this is destination kiteboarding rather than a grassroots spot. The closest meaningful alternative on the island chain is the open Atlantic beach on the northern shore for those wanting exposure to a bit more chop. What makes Cayo Guillermo singular is the combination: consistent trade wind kiting layered over a genuinely different cultural context that the rest of the Caribbean cannot replicate.
