Cabarete sits on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, roughly 15 kilometres east of Puerto Plata, where a long crescent bay opens directly to the Atlantic. A fringing coral reef runs parallel to the shore, splitting the water into two distinct zones. The town itself crowds the beachfront with kite schools, gear shops, beach bars, and open-air restaurants — a compact, well-worn hub that makes no effort to feel exclusive and is better for it.
The Caribbean Trade Winds arrive from the east-northeast each afternoon with reliable consistency, typically building to 18–25 knots between midday and late afternoon before easing at dusk. The orientation is effectively side-shore to side-onshore, and the reef holds back ocean swell to keep the inside lagoon relatively flat — ideal for beginners and intermediate riders working on their technique. Beyond the reef, chest-high Atlantic wind swell gives wave riders genuine faces to work with. January through July delivers the most consistent wind; peak months run April to June.
Cabarete has more certified kite schools per square kilometre than almost anywhere in the Caribbean, including long-established operations running IKO-certified instruction in multiple languages. Kite Beach is the main launch, with a loose but functional right-of-way culture that experienced instructors help newcomers navigate. Playa Encuentro, a short drive west, offers consistent reef breaks for surfers and advanced kiters wanting more powerful waves. The town's infrastructure — mechanics, spare parts, relaunch assistance, medical clinics — means equipment problems rarely derail a session or a trip.
